INTERSEX RIGHTS IN ZIMBABWE

Today Messrs Tsunga Bamu Law International had a meeting with authorities from the Government of Zimbabwe and agreed a constructive way forward to resolve the legal gaps and needs in the protection of the rights of intersex people.

Today Messrs Tsunga Bamu Law International had a meeting with authorities from the Government of Zimbabwe and agreed a constructive way forward to resolve the legal gaps and needs in the protection of the rights of intersex people.

This follows a constitutional application that TBLI had filed in an effort to assert and protect the rights of Intersex people. After the filing of the case, it was brought to the attention of TBLI and its clients that certain genuine and inclusive processes were being undertaken involving various government departments, development partners in particular the UNDP, the intersex community and other key stakeholders in the intersex ecosystem to increase awareness and sensitisation that helps in proper and informed law reform.

The parties collectively agreed to wait on litigation and review the situation after April 2026, in the belief and conviction that if there is genuine desire for passing legislation to better protect the rights of intersex people, then visible indicators of inclusive and comprehensive processes should be available then.

TBLI is thankful and appreciative of all the key stakeholders who agreed to use the Alternative Dispute Resolution ADR procedure in order to focus on positive law reform outcomes.

Key Stakeholders

  • Arnold Tsunga
  • Jeremiah Bamu
  • Health Law Policy Consortium
  • UNDP Zimbabwe
  • Africa Judges and Jurists Forum
